schultz fire

Published on June 22, 2010 by

Last Saturday and Sunday I got out for nice little 80 mile overnight trip on my bicycle.
About the time this photo was taken on Sunday, the officials say that someone was abandoning a campfire within a few hundred meters of this location. Much of the area I rode Sunday morning is now chared or still ablaze.

The fire has topped 10,000 acres and now threatens the Inner Basin…

Wonderful biking and skiing areas are forever gone… Coworkers and friends have been evacuated from their homes…

Might as well go play and hope it’s another blessing in disguse…

  1. Oh no, the IB is a magical place. I saw a massive plume from the Tushars (!) on Sunday, I thought it must have been the North Rim but apparently not.

Nice outlook on it though – not much you can do about it.

  2. from what I have seen of photos, it looks like this fire was not overly devastating. Perhaps it was a healthy and needed fire. Hope to get up there soon and find out.

  3. I was in Flag all last week – amazing how clear the skies were in downtown, but the smoke plumes overhead just kept on going. Fires don’t destroy trails – it’s usually the deadfall afterward that can be so overwhelming to continually thin. Flag is really lucky to have Flagstaff Biking and the interest of the community in keeping trails clear and open…..
